[May 28, 2010]. We are very pleased to inform our friends that Image started a new important collaboration with Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow www.strelkainstitute.com. The Institute started yesterday, with a conference by Rem Koolhaas, its rich program of summer events. Strelka, that aims at raising a whole new generation of architects, designers and media specialists, offers a new space for cultural production to the youngest Moscow generation who feel the need to reflect and work on the transformation of the contemporary city.![]() Image contributes to the definition of Summer at Strelka, the rich summer program of the Russian institution, with a BEYOND MEDIA EXTENSION: a discussion and a screening of some of the best and most recent architecture videos selected for the BEYOND MEDIA festival www.beyondmedia.it and collected by Image ARCHIVE www.image-web.org/archive. The video program consists of two screenings, scheduled to take place on June 5 and 6, 2010. The first screening will be followed by a round table discussion with Kester Rattenbury, architecture critic and journalist, Kaspar Astrup Schröder, director of the film MY PLAYGROUND, and Marco Brizzi, curator of the BEYOND MEDIA festival, on the topic of "Storytelling in architecture". The video program is curated by Image ARCHIVE, the multimedia archive devoted to collecting, preserving and advancing architecture videos. [May 14, 2010]. The Italian architecture office of 2A+P/A www.2ap.it, founded by Gianfranco Bombaci e Matteo Costanzo, will exhibit a selection of their latest projects at Hyunnart studio (viale Manzoni 85, Roma), The exhibition, open June 4 thru 18 (vernissage on Thursday June 3 at 6 pm), is a an event part of the Festa dell'Architettura di Roma "Index Urbis" www.indexurbis.it curated by Francesco Garofalo, under the aegis of Istituto Nazionale di Architettura IN/ARCH Lazio and with the collaboration of Image press office. ![]() The exhibition, curated by Peter T. Lang and Patrizia Ferri, organized in cooperation with Mario De Candia and Paolo Di Capua, will feature 6 projects by 2A+P/A which clearly represent the studio's architectural research: the new Faculty of Architecture in Delft, the Netherlands, the Pop Music Center in Taipei, Taiwan, a residential complex in Tartu, Estonia, a pier in Dunkerque, France, a prototype for the dwelling unit in the "Production Condo" and the new Museum in Maribor, Slovenia. 2A+P/A will also conceive the exhibition design, and will aim at twisting visitors' perception of exhibition spaces: a surreal scenario where the projects will be presented through various media, such as drawings, images, wallpapers, models and videos. The installation will also turn into a set design for a Talk Show directed by Peter T. Lang. Video shooting from the Talk Show will be online, on the 2A+P/A's YouTube channel www.youtube.com/2APchannel. A limited edition catalogue, curated by 2A+P/A, will support the exhibition. The book, conceived as a sort of miniature installation, will include an essay by Peter T. Lang as well as a converation between Patrizia Ferri and the studio partners. Image, with its press office, works on the communication of the event. [May 11, 2010]. On June 18, 2010 a symposium dedicated to public works in Italy will take place in Modena. It's the occasion to go over, in the presence of renowned architects and scholars, some of the events that characterized recent Italian production, to enrich the debate on such a topical theme, to reflect on its possible future. PUBLIC WORKS. Designing for the community / Observations on the meaning of public works (June 18, Modena, baluardo della cittadella, 9:30 am to 7:00 pm), promoted and organized by the local Department of Public Works and curated by Lucio Fontana, is part of a wider program of events promoted by the Municipality of Modena to motivate citizens towards public works. The starting point is the recent publication of the book Opere pubbliche per la città. Dieci anni di interventi architettonici a Modena (artestampa, 2010) and the photographic exhibition of the same name that presents images of the works included in the book (the exhibition is scheduled to take place next September). "We wanted all the events in the program to take place in public spaces -Antonio Marino, Councillor for public works in the Municipality of Modena, says-. The symposium will be hosted in an old bastion, that has been restaured and set up to accommodate public meetings. We want to remind everybody that new uses of public spaces are envisioned as a resourse for the city and its inhabitants." ![]() The symposium consists of 3 parts: conference, projects, round table discussion. The first part explores the ethical, civil, social, legislative, and economical aspects as well as issues related to restoration and to the history of public works. Among participants are Alberto Giorgio Cassani, Amerigo Restucci, and Alessandro de Magistris who will offer a survey of public works in Italy in the last 3 centuries. During the second part, three architects –5+1AA, Stefano Boeri, Mario Bellini– will testify the evolution of public works by presenting some of their most recent projects. "The theme of public works has certainly changed in the last few years in Italy –says Fabrizio Lugli, executive manager for public works for the Municipality of Modena. Not only have codes and legislation changed, but also the means by which architects design." During the third part of the symposium, the Italian situation ("in which architects often have to deny their project because it was not built according to their design, given that the law allows this to happen so that citizens are left with a building, but without a piece of architecture,” explains Lucio Fontana)– and the French one ("where no contractor would dare modify a project, given that intellectual and material property are one thing, and the citizens can recognize an architecture for the city") will be compared.
