[May 28, 2010]. We are very pleased to inform our friends that Image started a new important collaboration with Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow www.strelkainstitute.com. The Institute started yesterday, with a conference by Rem Koolhaas, its rich program of summer events. Strelka, that aims at raising a whole new generation of architects, designers and media specialists, offers a new space for cultural production to the youngest Moscow generation who feel the need to reflect and work on the transformation of the contemporary city.

SUMMER AT STRELKA

Image contributes to the definition of Summer at Strelka, the rich summer program of the Russian institution, with a BEYOND MEDIA EXTENSION: a discussion and a screening of some of the best and most recent architecture videos selected for the BEYOND MEDIA festival www.beyondmedia.it and collected by Image ARCHIVE www.image-web.org/archive. The video program consists of two screenings, scheduled to take place on June 5 and 6, 2010. The first screening will be followed by a round table discussion with Kester Rattenbury, architecture critic and journalist, Kaspar Astrup Schröder, director of the film MY PLAYGROUND, and Marco Brizzi, curator of the BEYOND MEDIA festival, on the topic of "Storytelling in architecture".

The video program is curated by Image ARCHIVE, the multimedia archive devoted to collecting, preserving and advancing architecture videos.

[May 14, 2010]. The Italian architecture office of 2A+P/A www.2ap.it, founded by Gianfranco Bombaci e Matteo Costanzo, will exhibit a selection of their latest projects at Hyunnart studio (viale Manzoni 85, Roma), The exhibition, open June 4 thru 18 (vernissage on Thursday June 3 at 6 pm), is a an event part of the Festa dell'Architettura di Roma "Index Urbis" www.indexurbis.it curated by Francesco Garofalo, under the aegis of Istituto Nazionale di Architettura IN/ARCH Lazio and with the collaboration of Image press office.

THE POP OUT SHOW

The exhibition, curated by Peter T. Lang and Patrizia Ferri, organized in cooperation with Mario De Candia and Paolo Di Capua, will feature 6 projects by 2A+P/A which clearly represent the studio's architectural research: the new Faculty of Architecture in Delft, the Netherlands, the Pop Music Center in Taipei, Taiwan, a residential complex in Tartu, Estonia, a pier in Dunkerque, France, a prototype for the dwelling unit in the
"Production Condo" and the new Museum in Maribor, Slovenia.

2A+P/A will also conceive the exhibition design, and will aim at twisting visitors' perception of exhibition spaces: a surreal scenario where the projects will be presented through various media, such as drawings, images, wallpapers, models and videos. The installation will also turn into a set design for a Talk Show directed by Peter T. Lang. Video shooting from the Talk Show will be online, on the 2A+P/A's YouTube channel
www.youtube.com/2APchannel. A limited edition catalogue, curated by 2A+P/A, will support the exhibition. The book, conceived as a sort of miniature installation, will include an essay by Peter T. Lang as well as a converation between Patrizia Ferri and the studio partners.

[May 11, 2010]. On June 18, 2010 a symposium dedicated to public works in Italy will take place in Modena. It's the occasion to go over, in the presence of renowned architects and scholars, some of the events that characterized recent Italian production, to enrich the debate on such a topical theme, to reflect on its possible future.

PUBLIC WORKS. Designing for the community / Observations on the meaning of public works (June 18, Modena, baluardo della cittadella, 9:30 am to 7:00 pm), promoted and organized by the local Department of Public Works and curated by Lucio Fontana, is part of a wider program of events promoted by the Municipality of Modena to motivate citizens towards public works. The starting point is the recent publication of the book Opere pubbliche per la città. Dieci anni di interventi architettonici a Modena (artestampa, 2010) and the photographic exhibition of the same name that presents images of the works included in the book (the exhibition is scheduled to take place next September). "We wanted all the events in the program to take p
lace in public spaces -Antonio Marino, Councillor for public works in the Municipality of Modena, says-. The symposium will be hosted in an old bastion, that has been restaured and set up to accommodate public meetings. We want to remind everybody that new uses of public spaces are envisioned as a resourse for the city and its inhabitants."

The symposium consists of 3 parts: conference, projects, round table discussion. The first part explores the ethical, civil, social, legislative, and economical aspects as well as issues related to restoration and to the history of public works. Among participants are Alberto Giorgio Cassani, Amerigo Restucci, and Alessandro de Magistris who will offer a survey of public works in Italy in the last 3 centuries. During the second part, three architects –5+1AA, Stefano Boeri, Mario Bellini– will testify the evolution of public works by presenting some of their most recent projects.

"The theme of public works has certainly changed in the last few years in Italy –says Fabrizio Lugli, executive manager for public works for the Municipality of Modena. Not only have codes and legislation changed, but also the means by which architects design." During the third part of the symposium, the Italian situation ("in which architects often have to deny their project because it was not built according to their design, given that the law allows this to happen so that citizens are left with a building, but without a piece of architecture,” explains Lucio Fontana)– and the French one ("where no contractor would dare modify a project, given that intellectual and material property are one thing, and the citizens can recognize an architecture for the city") will be compared.

[April 12, 2010]. The opening of the Milan branch of the Pecci Center for contemporary art www.centropecci.it and the presentation of the new, mysterious installation by Maurice Nio www.nio.nl. are forthcoming. The opening event, promoted by the Region of Tuscany, Toscana Promozione and the Municipality of Prato, will take place on Wednesday April 14, 6 pm to midnight, in Ripa di Porta Ticinese 111 in Milan.

"We live in a world that is becoming more and more transparent. Riddles are being solved, secrets uncovered, irregularities glossed over, twists rationalized: the other becomes the same. At the point of complete transparency, we end up in a state of complete obscenity as well. After all, when all veils are gone, we are left with nothing but trivial nudity. The temptation has disappeared. At the same time, however, there is the awareness that 90% of our universe consists of dark matter. Matter that could well be the cause of many incomprehensible phenomena in the universe. If you apply this hypothesis to our world, that would mean that fortunately only 10% could really be transparent and obscene. So let us search for the rest, for that 90% dark matter. Dreams, emotions, plants, stones, but especially animals are part of that 90% dark matter. Animals do not talk. They growl, hiss, whistle, bark. We can hear them, but not understand them. That in itself makes them a mystery. What is more beautiful than staring at an animal that does not say anything? What is more beautiful than an animal that does not communicate and withdraws into its own shadow?." (Maurice Nio)

DARK MATTER

With his DARK MATTER installation, exhibited in the new Milanese venue of the Pecci Center, Maurice Nio reveals, once again, the emotional, sensual and mysterious components of his architecture. And as his project for the addition of the Pecci Center in Prato is under construction, the Milan venue -a vacant building among the industrial archeological area along the Navigli- will host exhibitions and conferences, the first one being the lecture by Maurice Nio scheduled for April 29 at 6 pm. In particular, the Milan venue will host one of the most interesting contemporary art collections in Italy.

"The real driving force of the Pecci Center’s extension anf of its new Milan branch -explains Marco Bazzini, artistic director of the Pecci Center- is its permanent collection that is the outcome of the 20-year activity. The possibility of exhibiting our collection of more than 1.350 art pieces is a great opportunity for us."

[April 7, 2010]. The last 15 years have witnessed a steady evolution of digital tools in architecture. The enthusiasm for the early experimentations of the 1990s moved from the anyhow valuable formal investigations to the development of architecture-related professions and to a growing interest for their needs.

COSTRUIRE DIGITALE

The forum titles COSTRUIRE DIGITALE. Riflessioni sui mutamenti della professione architettonica (BUILDING DIGITAL. Reflections on the changes in the architectural profession) is scheduled to take place at the SESV Gallery www.sesv.it of the University of Florence on Friday April 9 at 5 pm. The forum takes its cue from the recently published book by Stefano Converso, titled Il progetto della costruzione digitale (Maggioli, 2010) and by issued number 3 (L'architettura performativa dell'età dell'informazione, edited by Maurizio Meossi) of the magazine "esempi di Architettura" (2007). Moderated by Marco Brizzi, curator of the SESV Gallery, the forum will address the role digital tools play in the profession of the architect. Issues related to the management of complexity as well as to the relationship between design and techniques will be the starting point for a discussion on new professionalism, on the need to systematize inseparable disciplines so as to effectively complete a project. Participants in the forum are: Furio Barzon (Green Prefab), Stefano Converso (Università Roma Tre / DIPSA), Maurizio Meossi (Zaha Hadid Limited / SPIN+), Lian Pellicanò (IF Research / acme architetture), Eva Parigi (Ordine degli Architetti di Firenze / zpstudio), Alessandro Jaff (Fondazione degli Architetti di Prato e Firenze / JAFF ASSOCIATI).

[April 1, 2010]. Cities in history have always represented the outcome of a process of social interaction. The prevailing market and economic trends have distorted this relationship over time. The definition of micro-design practices that are capable of enhancing public space by promoting people's interaction and participation can directly and positively affect the quality of urban life.

These are the premises for the "Mano mano piazza" event which will take place on Saturday April 10, 3:30 pm to 7 pm, in piazza della Santissima Annunziata in Florence, Italy. This is the first one of a series of urban events -named URBAN FRUITS- promoted by "FFF" www.firenzefastforward.it, the six-monthly magazine founded last summer and devoted to ideas and visions for Florence. Curated by Gianni Sinni, graphic designer, and Marco Brizzi, architect, "FFF" has triggered reflections and gave boost to the city's community of designers and creatives: architects, artists, musicians, philosophers, writers, photographers, film makers, etc. recognized the magazine as a place where they could express their ideas and give voice to their visions for the city of Florence.

MANO MANO PIAZZA. URBAN FRUITS NO. 1

"Mano mano piazza", the title of an Italian nursery rhyme, will include guided tours, design workshops, interviews, games and street performers. These activities tend to re-establish a relationship between the monumental city and its citizens. And it all starts with those who possibly more than others bear the consequences of a widespread disregard for urban quality: the children. In this sense, it is especially significant that this event takes place during the "Animani" exhibition at the Istituto degli Innocenti, dedicated to visionary artist Mario Mariotti. "Mano mano piazza" will open with the performances of Cirque en piste!; Venti Lucenti www.ventilucenti.it will put on a participatory show with some 60 actors. During the afternoon, all participants will have the possibility to express their thoughts on the quality of urban life: Sociolab www.sociolab.it will interview people while Photo Safari will document all activities in its photographic set.

"Mano mano piazza", produced by the Istituto degli Innocenti www.istitutodeglinnocenti.it, Quartiere 1 and "FFF" www.firenzefastforward.it, with the collaboration of Lcd www.lcd.it and Image www.image-web.org, and with the support of Mukki, Fila and Corriere Fiorentino, launches the URBAN FRUITS event series. A permeable and vast container, capable of collecting, promoting and sharing civic design actions for the city of Florence.

[March 20, 2010]. Image ARCHIVE www.image-web.org/archive participates in FilmForum 2010 filmforum.uniud.it, with a program of architecture videos. FilmForum 2010, promoted by the University in Udine, includes a rich program of lectures, workshops, performances, and screenings and offers an important occasion for reflecting upon cinema and its evolution, from its origins to the new media. The international symposium on film studies, curated by Leonardo Quaresima and dedicated to the theme The film canon (Udine, Italy, March 16-18), will be followed by the VIII MAGIS International Film Studies Spring School (Gorizia, Italy, March 19-24) which will offer a program of screenings on the theme Audiovisual geographies. Cinema and visual arts across performance, installation, architecture, public space.

FilmForum 2010

In this context Image ARCHIVE presents a highly qualified selection of videos, some of which are investigating the urban landscape, others describe design theories, others still narrate an architectural idea. This is a new important occasion for the circulation of videos collected by Image for VISIONS, the ninth edition of the BEYOND MEDIA festival
www.beyondmedia.it. As the next edition of the BEYOND MEDIA festival is being prepared for next December, this new VISIONS EXTENSION will offer once again an occasion for observing contemporary video productions in the field of architecture as well as for reflecting upon the manifold interferences with film language. The architecture video program will be presented by Marco Brizzi on Sunday March 21 at 9 pm in Gorizia, Italy at the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Gorizia in via Carducci 2.
