Atelier Paul Laurendeau. Amphitheater Cogeco in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada.

April 24, 2017
The new amphitheater designed by Atelier Paul Laurendeau in Trois-Rivières reflects itself in the waters of the St. Lawrence River, creating drama, surprise and contrast, immediately becoming an urban landmark. The building gives shape to a receptive place for performance arts under a sharp 7,200 square meter rectangular roof, 26 meters tall, that shelters up to 3,500 fixed seats, the remaining 5,200 seats being on the grass. indoor and outdoor spaces blend and give a new identity to the site, formerly occupied by a paper mill.

A call for micro-strategies to activate new public spaces.

January 22, 2017
Which micro-strategies can be developed through design to stimulate the birth of new forms of public space in small and large cities, with limited investments? Which new ideas can emerge to interpret the contemporary cultural and economic trends, by activating new programs in the urban context? What role for cultural institutions, such as museums or contemporary art centers, to promote new relations with the urban environment?

Un’idea, una città (An Idea, A City). Museo delle Terre Nuove (Museum of New Towns), housed in the prestigious Palazzo d’Arnolfo in the town of San Giovanni Valdarno (20 miles southeast of Florence, Italy), and Casa Masaccio Arte Contemporanea invite young designers to join a competition to conceive a micro-strategy aimed at redefining the relation between the museum and the city.

Design solutions that will define new experiences in public space are expected that will focus on the arcade of the ancient Palazzo d’Arnolfo and that will be practicable as permanent installations. Strategies of collaboration with local institutions, producers, or companies will be welcome. Entries should be inspired by the key topics offered by the Museum, whose galleries introduce the public to development on medieval urban planning, to further encourage interaction and social thinking on public space, art, and the environment.

Official website for this competition is the one of Museo delle Terre Nuove: www.museoterrenuove.it. The deadline for applications is February 28, 2017. By March 6, 2017 the jury including Pippo Ciorra, Richard Ingersoll, Gianni Pettena, Camilla Perrone, Gianpiero Venturini will nominate the winner or the winning team that will be invited to San Giovanni Valdarno for a one-week long residency, during which meetings with local institutions, citizens and partners will take place that will move the design strategy to the next step.

When the Municipality of San Giovanni Valdarno entrusted us with the organizational and communication activity for this competition, we saw it as another good occasion for our group to encourage young designers to embrace an experimental approach to architecture, to challenge the given conditions with the power of ideas.

At Image we are aware of the needs public administrations have and we hence based out actions on strong immediacy and accessibility. Our team is supporting the entire development of this program and our press office is constantly active to report on the competition process, to highlight the most prominent topics, to stimulate an active participation on the part of young designers and to disseminate proposals and strategies.

We kindly invite interested young designers to access the competition call here.

Maurice Nio / NIO architecten. Pecci Center for Contemporary Art, Prato, Italy.

August 29, 2016
The Pecci Center began life in 1988 and was the first institution in Italy specifically built from scratch for exhibiting, collecting, conserving and documenting the most advanced artistic research. It is set to become an international reference point for the experimentation of multiple contemporary art languages. In October 2016 the Pecci Center reopens after the completion of the futuristic spaceship-shaped extension by Rotterdam-based Indonesian architect Maurice Nio, titled "Sensing the Waves," and the renovation of the original building designed by Rationalist architect Italo Gamberini.

Congregating resources helps to face new design challenges.

May 23, 2016
Multiple actions, widely distributed through selected Italian cities, are underway to collect proposals and effective solutions to emergent design challenges. Diverse topics are at the basis of meetings between Italian and Dutch professionals, promoted by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Rome. That's Sfide delle Città.

Time for Impact, curated by Gianpiero Venturini (Itinerant Office / New Generations) together with Marthijn Pool (space&matter) is one of the 7 projects financed by the Embassy after a call that was launched last year. It will take place during the 15. Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, starting May 26, 7:00 PM with an open discussion and a party at the Serra dei Giardini.

Time for Impact is a an online platform that works as an Architectural Time Bank and Kickstarting Tool, promoting urgent challenges in the built environment that are in need of design expertise, spatial know-how and budget. Creative people from all over the world are invited to pledge their time and know-how to collectively boost socially relevant projects.

"This years' Biennale, curated by Alejandro Aravena, highlights a broad selection of projects that showcase a high impact factor," the Italian and Dutch curators say. "As architecture touches on all relevant levels of society, we consider it's important to increase public awareness of the phenomenon. Architecture has risked to grow apart from society in the past few decades. However younger generations of architects are fully aware of their role and potential for impact on society, when using their skills in the right way."

Please also follow the other actions, part of the Sfide delle Città program, curated by Denise Houx and Inge de Boer (ROOFdinners, Milan and Turin), BAM! Strategie Culturali and Polo museale della Campania with Rijksmuseum and Open Cultuur Data (Wikimuseums, Naples), Carlo Capra and Associazione 4Tunnel with IammyCity (Spazi Centrali, Milan), Jeroen Laven and Gert Jan te Velde with Università Roma Tre and Eutropian (The City at Eye Level, Rome), Temporiuso and SUPERUSE Studios (Mappa dei cicli di riuso dei Mercati Generali, Milan), Itinerant Office / New Generations and Amateur Cities (Urgent City, Florence.)

In order to sustain with communication actions this project and the others carried out all over Italy in 2016 Image developed for the Embassy of The Kingdom of the Netherlands in Rome a flexible strategy aiming at keeping together professionals from both Italy and The Netherlands and summarizing the results of this extraordinary venture.

Please join us in Venice at Serra dei Giardini on May 26 to take part in this action, starting 7:00 PM, and follow the Sfide delle Città program on social media.
